About Stair & Roof
Stair & Roof is a small, independent set of calculators for the wood-framed parts of a house: stairs first, roofs and framing next.
What we are building
Stair layout and roof framing are where a carpenter's arithmetic gets tested. A stair that is off by half an inch shows up every time someone climbs it, and a rafter cut at the wrong pitch can waste a whole lift of lumber. We wanted tools that answer in the units people actually mark on wood, show the full working, and say plainly which code rule each check comes from.
The first section covers stairs: a stair calculator for risers, treads and run, and a stringer calculator for the layout and cut list. Roof pitch, rafters, board feet and deck framing are being written now and will appear in the menu as each one passes testing.
Principles
- Every result can be traced to a formula on the same page.
- Code limits are quoted with their section number and edition, never paraphrased into "rules" that do not exist.
- Nothing is published until its numbers agree with independent sources; the methodology page shows how.
- No sign-ups, no pop-ups over the calculator, no paid placements.
Who is behind it
The site is run by its owner, who writes and tests each calculator. Corrections from builders, inspectors and DIYers are welcome and get credited in the change log when they lead to a fix. Reach us at [email protected].
